We're going over some spectacular plants, and I wouldn't want you to miss them. These fruit trees we're talking about today are extremely unique and rare interspecific hybrid fruit trees. This means we're crossing two different species to create a new fruit!

Busting Myths About Hybrid Fruit Trees

A common misconception about these fruit trees is that they're not natural. People think they're created in some lab, but that's just not true. All of these trees have been meticulously hand-pollinated by Zager Genetics to make these new fruit varieties available to all of us. Just to clarify, I’m not affiliated with Zager Genetics; I simply love these trees and believe everyone should know about them.

1. The Amazing Aprium

First up on our list is the Aprium. As the name implies, this tree is a cross between an apricot and a plum. It’s about 75% apricot and 25% plum.

Size and Blooming:

  • Height: 10-15 ft.

  • Bloom Time: Early April

Cold Hardiness: Down to -30°F (-34°C)

Uses: Fresh eating, jams, pies, and salads

With its self-fertile nature, you only need one tree to get fruit! One thing to watch out for is late frost, which can affect blooming.

2. The Delightful Pluot

Next, we have one of my favorites, the Pluot, a cross that leans more towards the plum side unlike the Aprium which is more apricot.

Size and Blooming:

  • Height: 10-15 ft.

  • Bloom Time: Early March to April

Cold Hardiness: Down to -20°F (-29°C)

Uses: Fresh eating, pies, jams, ice cream toppings, and more

Important to note: You’ll need another Japanese plum or an interspecific hybrid containing a Japanese plum for fruit set.

3. The Balanced Plumcot

Next up is the Plumcot, a perfect 50-50 split between a plum and an apricot. This tree's genetic makeup serves as the foundation for the Aprium and Pluot.

Size and Blooming:

  • Height: 10-15 ft.

  • Bloom Time: Early March

Cold Hardiness: Down to -30°F (-34°C)

Uses: Fresh eating and desserts

Its self-fertile quality ensures you only need one tree to enjoy its delicious fruit, highlighting a balanced blend of plum and apricot flavors.

4. The Science-Fiction-Like Pluerry

Here's something really crazy: the Pluerry. A hybrid between a cherry and a plum, it's as fascinating as it sounds!

Size and Blooming:

  • Height: 12-18 ft.

  • Bloom Time: Late March

Cold Hardiness: Down to -30°F (-34°C)

Uses: Fresh eating, jams, and desserts

For fruit set, you’ll need another Pluerry or a late-season Japanese plum. The fruit itself looks like a miniature plum and tastes like a mix of plum and cherry!

"This is a fruit tree that still blows my mind and makes me feel like I'm living in a Sci-Fi movie."

5. The Multidimensional Nectaplum

As if we couldn't get any crazier, next on the list is the Nectaplum, a blend of a nectarine, apricot, and plum.

Size and Blooming:

  • Height: 10-15 ft.

  • Bloom Time: Early March

Cold Hardiness: Down to -10°F (-23°C)

Uses: Fresh eating, jams, and various desserts

It’s super sweet and self-fertile, so you only need one tree to enjoy this multidimensional fruit.

6. The Intricate Picatum

Last but not least is the Picatum, a triple hybrid between a peach, apricot, and plum. This tree offers a symphony of flavors that make it a focal point in any garden.

Size and Blooming:

  • Height: 10-15 ft.

  • Bloom Time: Early March

Cold Hardiness: Down to -30°F (-34°C)

Uses: Fresh eating, jams, jellies, and desserts

Its self-fertile nature means that just one tree will provide a good amount of fruit. The complex flavors and appealing appearance are sure to impress anyone.

These hybrid fruit trees are incredible additions to any garden. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, these trees offer something truly unique and rare.

Conclusion

Adding any of these unique hybrid fruit trees to your garden will not only provide delicious and versatile fruit but also serve as intriguing conversation starters. People will be amazed to see and hear about these intricate fruit trees.
