Sangue Dolce is an exceptionally productive fig variety known for its dusty purple skin, deep blood-red interior, and complex, sweet berry flavor profile. Its name translates from Italian to "sweet blood," which perfectly mirrors its striking color contrast and rich, sugary nectar. Discovered and introduced by a notable collector named Dom, this premium Mt. Etna-type fig is highly acclaimed for fresh eating, drying directly on the branch, and delivering heavy yields even on young trees.
  • Latin Name: Ficus carica
  • Site and Soil: Figs do well in a variety of soils but require at least 8 hours of sunlight during the growing season.
  • Pollination Requirements: Sangue Dolce is self-fertile (Common type).
  • Bearing Age: 1-2 years after planting; young 1-gallon plants frequently push fruit.
  • Size at Maturity: 10-20 ft in height, though it responds beautifully to pruning and can stay quite compact in containers.
  • Bloom Time: Flowers are not noticeable as they are inside the fruit.
  • Ripening Time: Early to mid-August, continuing until frost.
  • Yield: Heavy and prolific; recognized as one of the earliest and most robust producers in its class.
  • Pests & Diseases: Generally pest and disease resistant. It exhibits great resilience in rainy regions and can shrivel or dry naturally right on the tree without splitting. Cover with netting if birds become a problem.
  • USDA Zone: 6-10
